App Store keywords byte counter

Paste your keywords field: the tool counts bytes and characters and flags duplicates, wasted spaces and words already in your name or subtitle. It is free and needs no signup; your text stays in your browser.

Check your App Store listing as you type, for every language

LocalePilot is a desktop app that edits name, subtitle, promotional text, description and keywords in your fastlane/metadata files, with Apple's limits checked as you type and keywords counted in bytes. It is being finalized for macOS: leave your email to hear about the launch.

Bytes or characters: the rule applied

The App Store Connect reference sets the keywords limit at 100 bytes, while another Apple page talks about 100 characters. The tool counts bytes, the cautious reading: a field that fits in 100 bytes necessarily fits in 100 characters, so it will never be rejected.

In UTF-8, an unaccented letter takes one byte, an accented letter two, a Japanese or Thai character three. For English the question never comes up; for French the gap is a few bytes; for Japanese or Thai the field holds three times less text. Details and sources are in the guide on 100 bytes or 100 characters.

What the tool flags

  • Bytes and characters, with a gauge out of 100 bytes.
  • Duplicates, ignoring case and accents.
  • Wasted spaces around commas and empty items: the clean-up button removes them and shows the bytes saved.
  • Words already in the name or subtitle: most ASO guides advise against repeating them in keywords.

Limits of the tool

The tool counts and cleans: it does not measure a keyword's search volume or competition, and cannot tell whether your list will rank better. It does not contact App Store Connect: if the limit seems too cautious for a non-Latin language, try a longer list directly in App Store Connect, which rejects an over-long field immediately.

Frequently asked questions

How many characters can App Store keywords have?

The App Store Connect reference says 100 bytes, another Apple page says 100 characters. For unaccented letters the two are identical; with accents or non-Latin characters, 100 bytes is fewer than 100 characters.

Should I put spaces after commas?

No. Separate keywords with commas and no spaces: every space costs a byte for nothing. The clean-up button removes them.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. The count is a simple calculation done in the page: your keyword list, often confidential before release, goes nowhere.

Why flag words already in the name or subtitle?

ASO guides generally advise against repeating in keywords what the name and subtitle already say, to save room. Fill in those two optional fields to see the repeats.

Does the result apply to every language?

The count is the same, but each language has its own keywords field: with fastlane, one keywords.txt per locale folder. Check them one by one.

How is this different from LocalePilot?

This tool counts one field at a time. LocalePilot is a desktop app, being finalized for macOS, that edits the whole listing in fastlane/metadata, language by language, with limits checked as you type.
